19 weeks pregnant: baby size, symptoms and what to expect
At 19 weeks pregnant you’re in the middle of the second trimester, almost halfway. Your bump is growing, and the mid-pregnancy anomaly scan usually happens in the next couple of weeks.
Your baby at 19 weeks
- The baby weighs around 270 g (most are between about 230 and 320 g) and measures about 15 cm from head to bottom — roughly the weight of a pomegranate.
- Adult teeth are starting to form behind the first (milk) teeth.
- The baby is putting on weight steadily, with lots of growth still to come.
- You may already feel movements — often described as fluttering — or they may come a little later.

Your body at 19 weeks
- Relaxin loosens your ligaments, so high-impact exercise like running can feel uncomfortable; staying active is still good for you.
- Tiredness, trouble sleeping, round ligament and pelvic pain are common.
- Leg cramps, heartburn, swollen hands and feet, nosebleeds and skin changes such as chloasma (darker patches on the face) can appear.
- Many people feel better in the second trimester than in the first.
Appointments and things to do
- The 20-week (anomaly) scan is usually done between 18 and 21 weeks. It checks the baby’s growth and development, the placenta and more.
- Most people feel their baby move between 16 and 24 weeks; in a first pregnancy it may be after 20 weeks.
- Start pelvic floor exercises if you haven’t already.
- Think about where you’d like to give birth and book antenatal classes.
Working out your dates
“19 weeks pregnant” is counted from the first day of your last period, not from conception, which is about two weeks later. If you’re not sure exactly how far along you are, the gestational age calculator gives the exact weeks and days, and the OB wheel shows your due date and every milestone. For which trimester and month you’re in, see the trimester calculator and the weeks to months converter.
