11 weeks pregnant: baby size, symptoms and what to expect
At 11 weeks pregnant you’re near the end of the first trimester. The baby — now called a fetus — has all its major organs in place and is growing quickly. Many people have their dating scan around this time.
Your baby at 11 weeks
- The baby is about 4 cm long from crown to rump — roughly the size of a fig — and weighs around 45 g.
- The head is still large compared with the body, but the body is catching up fast.
- Fingers and toes are separating, and tiny fingernails and ears are forming.
- The baby moves, but it’s far too small for you to feel yet. The placenta is about to take over from the yolk sac in nourishing the baby.

Your body at 11 weeks
- Tiredness is still common; gentle exercise such as walking can help.
- Stretching muscles and ligaments can cause some tummy discomfort. Severe pain should be checked.
- Your blood volume is rising — by up to 50% during pregnancy — which can make you feel hot, sweaty or dizzy.
- Nausea, heartburn, headaches, bloating and skin changes are all common.
Appointments and things to do
- The dating scan (usually between 8 and 14 weeks) checks the baby’s size to confirm your due date.
- If you choose screening for Down’s syndrome and other conditions, the nuchal translucency measurement — the fluid at the back of the baby’s neck — is usually taken at this scan, between 11 and 14 weeks.
- Your booking appointment, if you haven’t had it, usually happens by 12 weeks.
- Keep taking folic acid until at least 12 weeks.
Working out your dates
“11 weeks pregnant” is counted from the first day of your last period, not from conception, which is about two weeks later. If you’re not sure exactly how far along you are, the gestational age calculator gives the exact weeks and days, and the OB wheel shows your due date and every milestone. For which trimester and month you’re in, see the trimester calculator and the weeks to months converter.
